Choosing a wallpaper + the ones we considered for our bathroom

The wallpaper world is delightful but a little overwhelming. I found myself joyful but intimidated at the thought of choosing one. However, the process ended up being quite fun. Here’s how we did it (and would mostly do it again) for anyone else who can relate.

Decide on a color for the room.

(This was the more challenging part, as I am always drawn toward green but wanted to bring in another color for this room. We finally decided to focus on blue because it complements the gold hints in our marble tile.)

Purchase a handful of samples.

Samples range in price, but we appreciated working with Wallpaper Direct, which offers very affordable pricing on their huge inventory of papers. How many samples you purchase really just depends on how much time you’d like to spend looking and on your budget for this part of the process.

Tape them up with painters tape; live with them for as long as necessary.

As with paint samples, this step is very helpful and very necessary; we often need time to evaluate and rest with possibilities. Little by little, my husband and I took down the samples that weren’t resonating with us until we had just two left. These were the finalists:

NO. 1
NO. 2

Measure (or use an online wallpaper calculator).

I was not confident in my ability to measure our room, so I used Wallpaper Direct’s handy calculator. However, there are resources online if you’d like to learn how to measure yourself. If you are planning to hire out the painting or wallpapering work, alternatively, your installer will likely do this step for you.

Order & wait.

This is the stage we are in now, and I am enjoying the opportunity to work on a few other areas. We plan to install the paper ourselves and may have some tips to share when the time comes.

In the meantime, here’s a roundup of my favorite blueish papers.

Have you ever installed wallpaper? Removed it? Would you do either again? ; )
