In search of a beautiful wastebasket + a round-up of my favorites

Trash, like bathrooms, is one of the unfortunately unavoidable parts of being alive. Many of us, despite our worthy efforts to reduce waste, still produce a bit of it. And we need somewhere to put it besides on the floor or on our desks or where ever else dirty tissues and dust get to.

We turn to trash cans, more desirably called “wastebaskets,” and we make our bathrooms as lovely as we possibly can.

As our bathroom renovation nears its finish, I am at last sourcing the accessories (wastebaskets among them) that will complete the room. I wasn’t sure where to begin my search, a bit skeptical that I’d find something beautiful and affordable. Trash cans can derail a room, I’ve noticed. Let’s be clear though; I’ve nothing against any trash can on its own, but how a stainless steel box distracts from the traditional kitchen or how the plastic cylinder upsets the corner of an otherwise lovely powder room. Drawing our eyes away from the whole, they detract from its general beauty.

It’s these little accents that can also bring harmony to a room. Small details like hardware and baskets communicate personality and likewise give a room a small bit of fun or serious. They correspond with the overall theme but add their own note. They have, maybe, an underestimated role.

Despite my skepticism, I was pleasantly surprised by a few options and wanted to share the favorites here. I discovered a range of prices and styles—depending on budget and aesthetic—but all are beautiful and the perfect neutral but thoughtful complement to an overall design. I hope they’re helpful starting points for whenever you’re next in need of an appealing container for your rubbish.
